Fair Trade Fortnight

910px-Fair_Trade_coffee_NorwayThis year’s Fair Trade fortnight runs from 23 February to 8 March.  Because of various complications, stalls will be held at St Andrew’s at either end of the fortnight, today, on Sunday 22 February and on Sunday 15 March.  As well as gifts and the usual goodies, there will be Easter egg catalogues so that you can order yours.  95% of takings go back to the One World Shop to support the producers, 5%, and any donations, is sent to support the work of Fr David Cullen in Zambia.

First Sunday of Lent

Today is the First Sunday of Lent and we are faced with the temptations offered to Jesus and his resistance to them. We should identify our temptations and ask what is needed to overcome them. We should also ask positively what we are giving for Lent – and as well as things from our plenty perhaps we need to look at perhaps giving something that we cannot recover – namely our time. Perhaps one hour a week to help others would be a good thing.

The SCIAF small boxes are available and this is a good year to be generous since the government to mark SCIAF’s 50th anniversary is matching pound for pound all donations.

This afternoon at 3.00pm is the Rite of Election in the Cathedral for all those from throughout the diocese who are joining the Church this year.

We remember especially in our prayers today Fr Nick whose grandmother died last week and whose funeral is this Thursday.

Michael Regan.

A view From The Bridge:

1024px-US_Navy_100327-N-1876H-006_Lt._Cmdr._Adam_Cheatham_observes_operations_from_the_bridge_of_the_littoral_combat_ship_USS_Independence_(LCS_2)Last weekend there was a degree of uncertainty about the future of the parish community in St Andrew’s.  Material published in the civil press based on the letter from Archbishop Cushley that had previously distributed was interpreted as a threat to close this place.  We have to recognise that there will be changes, based on numbers and provision but we also need to realise that burying heads in the sand and saying things must remain the same as they always have been is not an option.  We have to work to sustain the community and to discuss the best option, which does not include closure as the community has great strengths.  At the parish meeting we will take this forward but I would ask all people to pray for wisdom and discernment for all of us.

Ecumenical Lent groups 2015

Over five weeks of Lent, small groups will meet for Bible study, discussion and prayer, using a new study guide written by Cathy Madavan called ‘Approaching Jesus’.
